Brief Biography

Patrick L. Holland, the son of Dennis and Mary Holland, was born in Pennsylvania in 1971. His family lived in Ohio (home of the Buckeyes) until 1983, when they moved to Jacksonville, Florida. Pat attended Terry Parker High School in Jacksonville, graduating in 1989. This was followed by four years at Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey, and graduate school at the University of California at Berkeley with Bob Bergman and Dick Andersen. He received his Ph. D. in inorganic chemistry in 1997 and then did postdoctoral research in Bill Tolman's research group at the University of Minnesota. In July of 2000, he joined the faculty at the University of Rochester, where he is currently Associate Professor.

Pat's favorite avocation is music. He has played the piano since age 5, and has spent many enjoyable years both as a soloist and as an accompanist for choirs, vocalists, instrumentalists, and musicals. His butt bears the scars of all of the piano benches. In high school, he accompanied the Florida High School All-State Chorus for four years, as well as the choruses at his high school. At Princeton, he was lucky enough to have many musical opportunities, including being accompanist and assistant director of the Freshman Singers, accompanist and singer in the P.U. Glee Club (the chorus), and musical director in "Charlie Brown," "Pippin," and "A Chorus Line," as part of the Princeton University Players. He also played piano/keyboard for numerous shows, including with the Triangle Club. Since college, he has sung with the Oakland Symphony Chorus and the San Francisco Symphony Chorus in California, and in the Oratorio Society and the Minnesota Chorale in the Twin Cities, and with Musica Spei and other small ensembles in Rochester. Currently, he is having fun playing jazz piano with small and large ensembles in the Rochester area.

Pat's life became a better place in 1996 when he married Maggie Langford, another Princetonian. Since June 2000, they have lived in marital bliss in Brighton, a suburb of Rochester. They enjoy hiking, camping, music, and swilling wine. Maggie is currently a graduate student in the Community and Preventive Medicine Dept. at the University of Rochester, where she has received her Master's in Public Health and expects to complete her Ph.D. in in Health Services Research in 2009. Pat's father, Dennis, and stepmother, Duffy, live in Pittsboro, NC when they are not traveling the globe. His brother Mike lives in Norwalk, CT with his wife Eliza and daughter Merrin, and the Hollands try to visit each other as often as possible.
