Not Voodoo Home / Archive / Comments?

Major changes have been made on the Not Voodoo website. Graphics have been added to the home page and the layout has been altered to accommodate a better view. The Tour of Collective Wisdom has been created for easy access to all the pages that survey the experiences of synthetic organic chemists. Many compounds and references have also been added to these interactive pages by visitors. Below is list of new features.

New Pages:

Workup Formulas for Specific Reagents contains detailed workup procedures for triphenylphosphine oxide, copper salts, boron compounds, tributylin halide salts, metal salts, aluminum based reductions, titanium, chromium oxidations, and m-CPBA.

Weighing Reactants and Reagents: Troubleshooting like other troubleshooting pages on the site, includes solutions to problems one might face during different situations. For instance: I have a small amount of oil (say, 40 mg) in a flask. I only want to use some of it (say 10 mg), but I do not know how to weigh it accurately. Solutions to this and many other problems are listed on this page.

How to Prepare LDA describes a simple procedure for the preparation of LDA.

How to Clean Glassware
From the chemistry laboratory page at Truman University, this page has useful methods for cleaning items, such as fritted funnels, and information on different cleaning solutions, in addition to a general cleaning procedure.

How to Acquire a Good 1H NMR Spectrum is a step by step process one might find useful to obtain a 1H NMR. This page also has helpful links to tips and rules of thumb.

How to Grow X-Ray Quality Crystals is a detailed page desribing hints for growing high quality crystals, contributed by Dr. Rene J. Lachicotte.

Jones Reagent contains a simple procedure for making Jones reagent.

Magic Formulas is a collection of common formulas synthetic organic chemists use regularly.

Repercussions of Leaving an Experiment Unattended highlights some consequences of not paying attention to your reaction.

Leaving the Lab suggests times when it is OK or not OK to leave the lab.

In October, there were 920 new visitors and 54 returning visitors.

We are still in the process of innovating our website; feel free to e-mail us with any additional information and/or suggestions. If you would like to write a short description on any of of our wanted topics, we will post it with (or without) your name. This month, we are especially looking for the topics below.

The Most Wanted List:

Stay tuned for the following pages: Development, How to Write an Experimental, How to Work on a Small Scale, First Time Through, Big Complaints, For First-Year Graduate Students, How to Work in an Inert Atmosphere, Literature Notes, Reagent Notes, Characterization Notes, Spectroscopy Notes, Recordkeeping Notes, Filtration Notes, and Equipment Notes.
