Chem424 - Synthetic Polymer Chemistry


Course Description

Synthetic Polymer Chemistry presents the modern synthesis of polymers from the point of view of mechanistic organic chemistry. All of the principal methods of polymer synthesis are covered in depth, with particular emphasis on recent advances in methodology. Topics include new reaction chemistry and chain architectures, advances in polymerization catalysis, and structure/property relationships. The class will feature a few guest lectures by experts on selected special subjects. Students will be expected to read and analyze articles from the polymer literature.

This course is intended for graduate students in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science. Prerequisites: one year undergraduate courses in both Organic and Physical Chemistry. A graduate course in Adavnced Organic Chemistry is recommended but not required.

The course is taught by a research scientist from local industry, who is an adjunct professor in the Department of Chemistry.
